Press release on bicycle accident

SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES BICYCLE ACCIDENT

Greenport, NY- Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that on May 12, 2017 at approximately 4:06pm, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched by Columbia County 911 to a reported car verses bicycle accident on State Route 203, in the area of Browning Hill Road in the Town of Ghent.

Deputies found that a 16 year old female from Austerlitz was riding her bicycle on State Route 203and lost her balance when she went off the shoulder of the roadway. The female operator was not wearing a helmet and when she went off the roadway, she went down a ditch and fell off her bicycle striking her head. The Deputy at the scene was able to determine through interviews and investigation that there was no vehicle involved in the accident.

Chatham Rescue Squad responded to the scene and evaluated the female. The female was transported to the Chatham Fairgrounds where the Chatham Fire Department set up a landing zone. The female was airlifted to Albany Medical Center by LifeNet 71 for a head injury. According to Albany Medical Center, the female bicyclist is currently in stable condition.

Chatham Rescue Squad, Chatham Fire Department, and the Chatham Police Department assisted at the scene.
